What It Means to Be an Evidence-Based Doula (And Why I Don’t Care How You Have Your Baby)

A birth doula in Connecticut assisting a pregnant woman in labor in a hospital room

Here’s the truth: I honestly don’t care how you give birth.

Yep, I said it.

I don’t care if you want to walk into the hospital backwards and ask for that epidural with your very first contraction. I don’t care if your dream is to birth under the stars, deep in the woods, using your hooves to make a soft little nest and drop your baby into a pile of leaves like a serene, magical deer.

I care about you. And I care that you have evidence-based information so you can make the decisions that feel right for you—and no one else.

So, What Is an Evidence-Based Doula?

Being an evidence-based doula means I don’t push an agenda, and I don’t work from trends or fear-based advice. I stay grounded in research, clinical guidelines, and real data—not just vibes.

Whether you’re preparing for an unmedicated birth, a planned cesarean, an induction, or something in between, I make sure you understand:

• What the options are

• Why they’re being offered (or not)

• What the risks and benefits are—backed by data

• How to ask questions and advocate clearly

My goal is to make sure you don’t just know what’s happening—I help you understand why. That way, you’re not just reacting to decisions being made around you—you’re making informed choices you can stand behind.

I Support You—Wherever You Are

Every birth is different, and so is every person. When you work with me—whether in person or virtually—I meet you exactly where you are. I work with families in and around Connecticut and New York City, and I support clients virtually across the country.

If you’re in a hospital, at a birth center, or on the road to figuring that out—I’m in your corner.

Whether you’re:

• Crunchy, clinical, spiritual, science-minded—or a beautiful combo of all the above

• A first-time parent or preparing for your fifth

• Pregnant after infertility, loss, or via surrogacy

• Just trying to figure out what questions to ask

…I’m here to support you in making confident, informed decisions that feel aligned with your values.

I love Teaching You to Be a Proactive Patient

When we work together, I’m not just handing you a checklist—I’m helping you think critically and ask better questions. I want you and your partner to feel empowered to say:

• “What’s the evidence behind this recommendation?”

• “What are my options?”

• “How do I feel about this decision?”

Because being a proactive patient changes everything. It can shift your birth from something that happens to you into something you’re actively participating in—even if things get unpredictable.

Because in the end, its not your birth that matters; it’s how you feel about your birth.

No matter what your ideal birth looks like, you deserve support that’s free of judgment and full of facts. If you’re looking for an evidence-based doula in Connecticut or New York, or you’re seeking virtual doula support anywhere in the U.S., I’d love to walk with you on this journey.

You bring the vision. I’ll bring the research, the tools, and the heart.
